Photos of Museum of Human Evolution

Burgos, Spain 10034 by hdes.copeland

A bronze representation of Neanderthal man escorts a child of modern man through a maze of mysterious siloettes of Medieval monks. This alludes to the knowledge that Burgos has supported human settlements for at least 100,000 years. Near Burgos, and only more fully uncovered since the 1970's, is the site of one of the world's greatest and most complete deposits of archeological material associated with the early migration of modern man and some of his relatives. These would include groups that migrated out of Africa over the last 100,000 years or so, into Europe, Asia and beyond. Near this provocatively thoughtful example of public art is the Museo de la Evolución Humana, or the Museum of Human Evolution. One of the starkly modern museum's exterior walls reveal an exposed red structural grid which supports its four floors. This exposed structural grid may be a reference to the trusses supporting the builders and masons tables that appear in the Gothic arch over the visitor's entrance to the cathedral. Both the new museum and the old cathedral are shrines with relics to attract pilgrims to the city. It would appear this is not an unintended irony. An American student recently asked, "For a city so religious, how can they also support a museum about evolution?" Contemporary Americans might be among the few in the would who would see this as a contridiction. To the people of Burgos, religious or not, they see it as no conflict at all. It's all part of a long tradition that is still evolving. Their campaign for the 2016 designation as the temporary cultural capital of Europe says it all: R-evolution! Burgos, Spain.
