Wollongong is a city on the east coast of Australia, about two hours south of Sydney. It is the third largest city in New South Wales and Australia's ninth largest city.
Its history is linked to mining and industry, and it still has a steelworks and a large port. In addition it is home to a well-regarded university and has a developing tourist industry.
It features some of New South Wales' best beaches, but also offers bushwalks on the magnificent Illawarra Escarpment, which rises to over 1000 feet behind the city. It is also home to the southern hemisphere's largest Buddhist temple.
It has a climate offering warm, sometimes wet, summers and mild dry winters.
This picture was taken for the Flickr Bingo 'Hometown Tourist' challenge. I tried to get a shot that captured as many features of the city as I could get. It's taken from Flagstaff Hill, and features one of the cannons of the Flagstaff Battery. Beyond it can be seen Belmore Basin, which is Wollongong's harbour, and home to a number of fishing vessels. Indeed there's good fishing off the breakwaters. The lighthouse was built in 1871, and is one of the city's icons. Beyond it is part of the city itself, and beyond that is the Illawarra Escarpment, dominated by Mount Keira. Above the cannon you can see Wollongong's North Beach.
Breakwater Battery is a tourist attraction, one of the Fortification in Port Kembla, Austràlia. It is located: 19 km from Wollongong, 219 km from Sydney, 560 km from Canberra. Read further
